The Ultimate Budget Desktop Replacement for £624? Dell Vostro 1710 with Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 review.

I recently purchased a Dell Vostro 1710 17" laptop, with 2.1GHz Core2 Duo, 4GB RAM and 1920x1200 display for £624 + VAT.

The requirement was for a new machine to be used as a 'desktop replacement' laptop. As I'm a software developer, it needed a big screen, lots of ram, and to have virtualisation support in the CPU. Fast OpenGL support didn't hurt either :-)

I have added an OCZ Vertex drive. This gives a fast SSD drive for the OS and the second drive bay will let me use the 320GB drive to provide storage capacity. (If I can ever get a cable for it...) See SSD benchmarks for performance details.

I'm outlining a few pieces of information which I discovered.

  • The nVidia GeForce 8600M GS graphics work 'out of the box' with the 'nv' driver, and also works painlessly with the nVidia closed source driver.
  • There are two 2.5" HDD bays, but if you order a Dell Vostro with one drive, you will not get the cable required to add a second drive. Finding such a cable is very difficult.
  • The VGA out is the old-style VGA connector, not DVI.
  • There is no e-sata - but it does have firewire.
  • The webcam does not work, yet. Though I've read that it does on 32 bit.
  • SSD slots works.
  • The fingerprint reader can work, but requires a bit of configuration. (It is the well supported thompson device.
  • If you talk to your account manager, you can get them to replace the WiFi card with an 'Europe Intel Pro Wireless 3945 (802.11 a/b/g) MiniPCI Card'. This makes the wireless work with 64 bit linux, without ndis wrappers, etc. This option is not available on the Dell website - you have to talk to an account manager.
  • Your account manager may be able to arrange an additional discount to the purchase price. Robinson Mulegeri managed to do this (thank you).
  • The 1920x1200 17" display is excellent, and is a very worthwhile upgrade.
  • The big screen means that the touch pad is ineffective in moving the cursor. If you up the acceleration, this fixes the touch pad, but an external mouse becomes too fast to use.
  • The built in sound is really quite good.

All in all, I am very happy with my purchase - the only real flies in the ointment are the missing second hdd cable and the lack of integral webcam support in Ubuntu 8.10.

Ubuntu 9.04 update.

Upgrading this laptop to 9.04 cause the following changes:

Touchpad acceleration is now sane :-)

es, they allow ssh - I use ssh extensively. I have had no problems with blocked ports - but I have only been using ssh, http and https - not torrents or voip.

Once connected you are allocated an IP on their 10.x.x.x network, so you are behind NAT - this may cause problems for some protocols.

Could you recommend linux software for checking for blocked ports at the ISP? I could set up a server with a netcats listening on all ports then use nmap - but this seems like a lot of hassle.

Thats great, thanks Chris. I've actually just got off the phone to Dell (about 35 minute phone call) and they have said that they can supply the cable, but that it would be £60 + VAT! When I queried it, it appears the part is £4 and the rest of it is courier delivery.

He did offer an alternative though - if I buy a hard drive from them they could include one without adding the extra postage. Drawback, a 250gb 5400 spin HDD (no more details available) is £170 + Vat. Methinks I'm not going to rush into that option either...

You have actually got me thining about using a SSD though, so I might try that as well.

Hi there,

I was trying to find out the spare parts needed to add 2nd hdd to vostro 1710 and found this page. Could you please share what all is needed? I read somewhere that apart from the hdd itself, I need the following parts:

- hdd caddy
- cable
- interposer
- screws

However it's very difficult to find out the part numbers (and the parts themselves). I found another relevant page, but not very sure the information is correct since the person who added the disk didn't confirm:

From that page:

You will need the hard drive, hard drive bracket (T780F), and HDD cable-dual HDD (U185D). Note: N156F if the hard drive cable for the primary drive.
Also, you will need four M3x3 screws (HD to carrier) and three M2.5x5 screws (carrier to mobo).

All I needed was the cable, and a couple of small screws I had lying round. If you're short of screws, you could secure each drive with just two screws.

I don't know what the 'interposer' is.

python dialog

Hi Chris

I liked PythonDialog for its simplicity. I would like to use it to create a text-user interface.

When I tried to install it, the code compiles alright. However, I can not run the demo file, with an error "executable file not found". setting up of paths has not helped.

I am using Python 2.5 on Ubuntu/ Opensuse. Can you help?

I was just making a reply (further up this thread) and realised that I had had no response when I sent you an email asking about you problem with PythonDialog (about three months ago).

Did you receive my email? If so, have you already solved the problem?
