Ubuntu 9.04 and t-mobile wireless broadband.
I bought a t-mobile 'USB stick 110' (which is actually a Huawai E160 dongle). It cost £40, including £20 credit. It's PAYG, costing £2/day, with a 3GB monthly limit.
I plugged it into my laptop and a new connection appeared in the network manager.
Sceptically, I clicked to enable it - and *it just worked*.
No messing with kernels, mode switching or anything else.
The E160 is detected as an E220, which is fully supported by linux.

Congratulations to the Ubuntu folks for doing such an excellent job here.

SSH
Hi, thanks for the information - that does sound like the best 3G in the UK! Would you by any chance know if they allow SSH over their network? Do they block any ports/protocols? Thanks.

SSH
Yes, they allow ssh - I use ssh extensively. I have had no problems with blocked ports - but I have only been using ssh, http and https - not torrents or voip.
Once connected you are allocated an IP on their 10.x.x.x network, so you are behind NAT - this may cause problems for some protocols.
Could you recommend linux software for checking for blocked ports at the ISP? I could set up a server with a netcats listening on all ports then use nmap - but this seems like a lot of hassle.
Hope this helps,
Chris.
Thanks!
Thank you for your reply! I was in fact so eager to try it out that I had already bought one between my comment-posting and yours :)
I'm not sure what the strategy of least hassle would be for trying all ports, but in any case I'm happy that ssh works. Skype does not work (understandable), but that may be a domain-blocking rather than a port-blocking affair, I'm not sure.
I'll add that in London, connection quality is sufficient to make ssh sessions "workable" indeed. On the train just outside the city it's a bit disappointing though: the connection is interrupted too often and latency is too high to get anything done that takes more than a few commands. Still, I'd say the technology has really arrived: it works effortlessly on Linux and where the network is up to it, it is quite agreeable to do real work on it. Now it's just a matter of expanding network coverage...
Nice job, it’s a great post.
